The Sikh Vote has launched a UK-wide survey inviting Sikhs to share their experiences and identify the issues they want elected representatives to address. The campaign aims to strengthen political participation and bring greater attention to concerns including hate crime, discrimination, religious freedom and the protection of Sikh places of worship.
KEY CAMPAIGN PRIORITIES
• Record anti-Sikh hate crime as a separate, mandatory category in police monitoring.
• Seek fair funding to protect Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship), and better education about Sikh history and identity in schools.
• Improve understanding of Sikh beliefs in public services and strengthen legal protection for Sikh articles of faith, including the Kirpan.
• Address concerns about transnational repression and the treatment of British Sikhs, including the case of Jagtar Singh Johal, who is currently out on bail in India. The campaign calls for an end to the remaining proceedings against him and his return to the UK.
The campaign is also seeking greater scrutiny of issues relating to Sikh rights, including the death of Avtar Singh Khanda and the UK Government’s role in the events of 1984.
A VOICE FOR THE COMMUNITY
“British Sikhs should have a meaningful opportunity to shape decisions that affect their lives. The Sikh Vote aims to bring people together, gather their experiences and ask elected representatives to respond to the issues that matter to the community.”
— Manpreet Singh, Spokesperson for The Sikh Vote
The Voice of the Sikh survey will help identify community concerns and inform engagement with politicians and public bodies. The campaign says respondents’ identities will remain confidential. Sikhs across the UK are invited to take part.
